"Anacapa" Business Car

The "Anacapa" is Chicago & Northwestern business car #410 (ex-John Palmer Gavit business car), a heavyweight private business car built in 1929 by Pullman. It is named for one of the channel islands off the Santa Barbara, CA, coast. This car provided luxury transportation and entertainment centers for business executives. The car has three bedrooms, a dining room, kitchen, servants' quarters, a bathroom and shower, and, at the rear end, a parlor and observation deck. The "Anacapa was originally used by John Palmer Gavit (1868-1954), editor of the Washington Evening Post, as his private business car. In 1940 the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad purchased the car and made it the railroad's premier business car.

The car weighs 105 tons. It rides on two 3-axle truckand is air conditioned by a Waukesha engine. The car is not open to visitors, but the vestibule may be seen through the observation porch windows. It is painted maroon and has white lettering.
