ATSF box car 205512MW (ex-ATSF 8524) was built in 1948 by the Pressed Steel
Car Company. It is a 50-foot long, 55-ton capacity steel car of the Fe-27 class. It is a type
known as an auto box car - it was used to carry auto parts from point of manufacture to point
of assembly, and these types of cars can be recognized by the double doors on each side.
It has dreadnaught ends and 14' staggered Youngstown doors. It was one of 500 built
(#s 8500-8999) for general merchandise service.They were reoutfitted for auto body loadings in the mid-1950s. It was
relegated to maintenance-of-way (note the MW following its number) work before being condemned
by the railroad and donated to the Museum. Note that the wheels have AT&SF cast into them.
#205512 is painted MOW silver and has black markings. When in revenue service it was painted
freight car color and had white markings.
