Center for Transportation & Commerce Baggage Cars #1001, 1002, 1103, and 1204

CTC Ry #1001, 1002, 1103 and 1204 (ex-Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul #1001, 1002, 1103 and 1204, exx-Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific #1001, 1002, 1103 and 1204) steel baggage cars were built between 1919 and 1936. 1001 and 1103 are riveted (probably constructed in 1919) while 1002 and 1204 are welded and were probably constructed ca. 1934-1936. The Milwaukee Road used these heavyweight cars in express service between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest. They were retired about 1965 and were sold about 1972 to the Oregon, Pacific and Eastern, where they were renumbered. The OP&E sold the cars to the Railroad Museum in 1978 and the cars were given theiroriginal numbers back, although no one is sure which car had which number because the OP&E did not keep track of which car received which OP&E number.

All four are baggage/mail cars having two 7' wide doors on each side of the car. The riveted types have low end brake wheels on one end, while the welded types have Miner ratchet levers on both ends. These cars house the permanent, protected exhibits of the Museum. They were purchased from the Oregon, Pacific and Eastern Railroad in 1978. When the Museum was being formed, they were painted Midnight Blue (Mary Moody Northen's favorite color) and had yellow lettering. The exteriors are being restored.
