The People's Gallery
The Museum’s premier site for large catered functions is The People’s Gallery. Capable of hosting events of up to 400 persons, the 6000+ square foot unique space, restored to its art deco ambience, is located in the station’s original Waiting Room on the ground floor of the former Santa Fe Union Station.
Ghosts of Travelers' Past
Full-sized figures created by Elliot and Ivan Schwarz in 1981 to depict individuals who might have passed through this waiting room in 1932. The artists hired live models and wrapped them in wet plaster to form a mold. With the aid of breathing straws and wired to suspend arms, the plaster covered models remained motionless for about five hours until the plaster dried. The plaster was then cut away in sections, then reassembled to form the molds for positive plaster casts. The 1930s clothing was either purchased at antique shops or sewn by the artists' assistants who used a 1932 Sears Roebuck and Co. catalog as a reference.
What better place to host that special event than this magnificent lobby with it's marble floors and columns, steeped with history and just waiting for you to add to
that history!
From 1932 when this building was built, until the last scheduled passenger train left Galveston in 1967, this area, the Santa Fe Union Station, served as the depot
for trains that would take passengers through Texas and beyond. Here, travelers would purchase their ticket, then pass the time by reading, conversing or taking a snooze while waiting for their train.
