The Texas Limited's "Chimayo" or Tremont House coach (ex-CNJ 2449, exx-ATSF 2811, exxx-ATSF "Chimayo" coach) was built by Pullman in 1938 for the Santa Fe. It has a small kitchen and bar at the A end, and a small toilet closet at the B end. There are 48 seats, fixed in pairs, with pairs of seats facing each other. The B end has a ratchet lever brake handle. The body is sheathed in unpainted, fluted, stainless steel. Markings are black. "Chimayo" is also known as the "Tremont House", the name of one of George Mitchell's enterprises. It bears Amtrak #800466. "Chimayo" ran on the Santa Fe's Super Chief train from Chicago to Los Angeles. As built it had 17 roomettes, each for one person, and one section. After World War II, "Chimayo" was dropped from the Super Chief train. It was converted in 1948 to a 48 seat coach, numbered 2811, and ran for the Santa Fe on lesser trains until 1971 when Amtrak was formed. It was sold to the New Jersey Department of Transportation in 1972, renumbered to 2449, fitted with 108 seats, and served in commuter service. It was purchased by Excursions Limited in 1987, remodeled to its present configuration, and used on the Texas Limited. At some time in its history it ran for the ill-fated Penn Central Railroad; if you look carefully at the side on the head end between the end of the car and the first window you can still make out the faint intertwined P and C logo of the Penn Central. |
