Click on image to enlarge UTLX tank car #83699 was built in 1963 by Union Tank Car Company. This is the second largest tank car ever built by Union. It was dubbed the "whale belly" tank car because of the low slung center area of the tank. In 1965 this car received the Best Industrial Design Award from the American Iron and Steel Institute. It is a 4 truck (16-wheel), 50,105-gallon, 104-ton capacity, 1-dome tank car that was designed to carry liquid petroleum gas or anhydrous ammonia. Note that there are three air brake tanks. This modern car also lacks poling pockets. This car was so large it was impractical to use and so served only 20 years. It was donated to the Museum in 1983 by Union Tank Car Company. It is painted white and has black markings.
